Artist statement

Lesia Mykhniuk is a Ukrainian artist whose work is a heartfelt exploration of childhood memories, cultural heritage, and the profound connection between humans and nature. Working in the style of figurative expressionism, Lesia combines emotional depth with symbolic imagery, religious motifs, and vibrant elements to create paintings that resonate on a deeply personal and spiritual level.

Deeply rooted in her Ukrainian upbringing, Lesia’s art reflects the harmony she experienced as a child among animals and the natural world. Her works often feature animals and floral details, celebrating the beauty and simplicity of life in rural settings while paying homage to her cultural identity.
As a figurative expressionist, Lesya uses vivid colors, dynamic forms, and textured details to bridge the gap between memory and emotion. Through her figurative works, she explores childhood and memory, the deep forces that shape us. She returns to memories: soft, elusive, and real.

At the heart of her visual language are animals and human figures. They are symbols of innocence, care, and quiet spiritual strength. It is often to animals that we first give our unconditional love as living beings, expecting nothing in return. This bond echoes the original purity inherent in childhood, the moment of our first experience of compassion.
Many of Lesia's images are born from her surroundings, personal stories, family memory, culture, and faith. They often carry not only individual but also biblical meaning. The words of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew (19:14) resonate deeply within her: “Let the little children come to Me, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

These words are not just a reminder of the importance of childhood; they reveal a truth about the power of kindness, sincerity, and the capacity to love. Childhood is not merely a past we leave behind, but a source of presence, truth, and connection.
